Dedication ceremony for Mimal Indigenous Protected Area in Arnhem Land

A celebration near Bulman has marked the dedication of the Mimal Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) in south-central Arnhem Land.

The new IPA covers more than 1.6 million hectares of land and is home to nine threatened species such as the northern quoll, black footed tree-rat and the Gouldian finch.

It includes many sites of cultural significance including rock art, dreaming lines and sacred places linked to spiritual ancestors.

Ancestral breastplate secured for Jerrinja Aboriginal Community

A 19th century Aboriginal ancestral breastplate has been returned to Country on the New South Wales South Coast with assistance from the Australian Government’s National Cultural Heritage Account.

The brass breastplate was made between by 1880-1910 and belonged to Queen Mary Carpenter, a highly regarded and influential member of the Jerrinja Aboriginal Community. 

Queen Mary and her husband James Golding, also known as ‘Billy Budd II, King of Jarvis Bay’, played a prominent role in local Aboriginal community life in Huskisson. 

New $15m commitment to accelerate First Nations restoration and protection of NSW’s Great Cumbung

The Albanese Government is pleased to support the protection and restoration of one of Australia’s most significant inland wetlands, through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) - delivering measurable carbon sequestration, biodiversity gains, and long-term stewardship by Traditional Owners.

Aboriginal Hostels Limited Board now all-Indigenous with new appointments

The Board of Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL) is now all Indigenous, following the appointment of four new Directors and a new Deputy Chairperson by the Albanese Government.

Aboriginal Hostels provide a home away from home for those in need, with culturally safe and affordable accommodation that supports First Nations people to access services, education and economic opportunities.

AHL operates more than 40 hostels across Australia, supporting around 17,000 First Nations people each year.

Green light for Ali Curung Youth Centre

The $3.1 million Ali Curung Youth Centre will soon break ground with the appointment of the successful construction contractor.

Central Australian business MPH Projects has been selected as the contractor, with the project on track for completion later this year.

The project is funded by the Albanese Government through the Barkly Regional Deal and is to be delivered by the Barkly Regional Council.

The facility, which replaces the 1950s-era corrugated iron building, features a multipurpose hall as well as a kitchen, office space and amenities.

Perinatal Mental Health Centre now open in Berry Springs

New and expectant parents in the Northern Territory now have access to free mental health support with the opening of a new Perinatal Mental Health Centre in Berry Springs.

Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Emma McBride MP, opened the new centre in Berry Springs today.

The Berry Springs Perinatal Mental Health Centre is funded by the Albanese Labor Government and operated by the Gidget Foundation.

The centre offers free psychological support for new and expectant parents throughout the perinatal period.
