Thanks for joining us today. Quite an interesting service that we've all seen here in Parliament House today. What do you think is the significance of it?

The Australian Government is seeking public expressions of interest from individuals to be considered for the Ambassador for First Nations People.

The Government is delivering on its commitment to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full, and embed Indigenous perspectives, experiences and interests into our foreign policy.

Australia’s foreign policy should reflect our modern diversity and the rich heritage of First Nations people.

The Albanese Government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce (WEET) will meet for the first time today and delivers on an election commitment to prioritise advice to government on the many issues facing women in the Australian economy.

The appointment of 12 eminent women will join the Chair of the Taskforce, Sam Mostyn AO, as the inaugural membership of the Taskforce.

ALEX CULLEN, HOST: Despite Treasurer Jim Chalmers noting a $50 billion windfall ahead of Labor's first Budget, it is not all good news with warnings the Budget boost is only temporary. For more we are joined by Finance Minister Katy Gallagher in Canberra. Katy, Good morning. Thank you for being with us. $50 billion – it is a big improvement. We should be celebrating surely, why downplay it?

GREG JENNETT, HOST: Finance Minister Katy Gallagher joins us now from Parliament House. Welcome Senator. I might get to all the things in your portfolio in just a moment, but just on this emerging news concerning the AFL - and the Hawthorn football club in particular - I appreciate it's for the AFL, but wondering on the details that you have observed, whether, because the wellbeing of First Nations people is involved here, might this be something that a body like the Voice to Parliament could embrace and pay attention to once formed?

Larrakia Development Corporation (LDC) has finalised an agreement with the Northern Territory Government providing land to develop the Larrakia Cultural Centre at Stokes Hill.

The Larrakia Cultural Centre is a cornerstone of the Larrakia Development Corporation’s plan to reinvigorate Larrakia culture, history and language.

Since 2005, the LDC has negotiated with the Northern Territory Government for the development of a Cultural Centre on a suitable site, based on a 1998 Native Title extinguishment agreement related to the railway corridor from Alice Springs to Darwin.

I begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we are meeting -

And pay my respect to elders past and present.

I thank Paul House for that welcome and the important role it has in maintaining our connection to culture.

I also extend that respect to all First Nations people here from ‘every point under the southern sky’.

Now, the decision for Australia to have its public holiday, not in line with the funeral, but of course, on the 22nd of September, let's just deal with the formalities of why that date has been chosen.

It was with great sadness I learned today of the passing of Uncle Jack Charles in Melbourne and I offer my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.

A Boon Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Woiwurrung and Yorta Yorta Elder, and a member of the Stolen Generations, Uncle Jack Charles is widely considered to be the ‘grandfather of Indigenous Theatre’, co-founding Australia’s first Indigenous theatre group, Nindethana in 1971.

He was a ground-breaking storyteller and activist who brought people in with his warmth and grace, never shying away from his past and who he was.
