The Indigenous Procurement Policy is increasing the rate of government purchasing from Indigenous businesses according to an independent evaluation.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, said the report by Deloitte Consulting shows that after three years the policy is working and highlights how practical steps have a real impact on supporting Indigenous businesses across Australia.
“I am pleased to see the Commonwealth has continually exceeded its targets for the number of contracts going to Indigenous businesses,” Minister Wyatt said.
“Year on year, we have seen the Government’s investment grow the Indigenous business sector.”
“The report shows that there’s still more that can be done, and that is why we have introduced a one per cent value based target from 1 July this year, rising to a three per cent value target over eight years.”
“We are also expanding the number of industries for which contracts include minimum Indigenous participation requirements, giving Indigenous businesses more opportunities to land higher-value contracts across more industry sectors.”
“This means the Government’s supply chain is increasingly more diverse and representative of the commercial landscape.”
“More than 450 businesses contributed to the evaluation and I thank them for the insights on how we can best help Indigenous businesses plan for the longer-term, invest in their workforce and further strengthen the sector.”
“The Morrison Government will continue to work with Indigenous businesses, particularly in rural and remote Australia, to increase the awareness and understanding of the policy and how it can deliver sustainable investment and support Indigenous businesses to achieve their goals.”
“This will include hosting business trade fairs in more regional locations and linking Indigenous businesses with support services so they can get the most out of the policy.”
The National Indigenous Australians Agency is working through recommendations that have not already been implemented and is considering changes that can be made to ensure the best outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
