Alleged racial discrimination by Ibis Alice Springs

Release Date:

Media release

Reports in the media today that the Ibis Alice Springs has been systematically and routinely discriminating against Aboriginal guests are completely unacceptable.

I will not only seek an urgent explanation from the company but will also ensure that any action under relevant Racial Discrimination Act provisions are pursued in full.

As both a Senator for the Northern Territory as well as Minister for Indigenous Affairs, I am deeply disappointed and outraged to learn that this sort of conduct is still occurring in Australia in this day and age.

I call on anybody who believes they may have been subject to this racist conduct, or if you know somebody that may have been subject to this conduct, to contact either my office or the office of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner.

I welcome the statement from Ibis and commitment to take action to address the incident. I look forward to discussing this with Ibis.

I will announce any further actions the government can take once I have more information and facts at hand.
