Critical housing upgrades delivered for Mungkarta

The Albanese Labor Government, in partnership with the Northern Territory Government, has delivered a $3.6 million upgrade of housing and infrastructure in Mungkarta, an Aboriginal homeland 80 kilometres south of Tennant Creek. 

This investment is part of the Homelands Housing and Infrastructure Program (HHIP), a joint initiative to improve living conditions in remote homelands across the Northern Territory. 

The final housing upgrades for Mungkarta were completed this month, ensuring residents have access to safe and appropriate housing.

Supporting Barunga Festival and strengthening First Nations Culture and Connection

The Albanese Labor Government is proud to invest $250,000 to support the 2025 Barunga Festival and its celebration of First Nations art, music, dance, sport and culture.

The festival is an important annual event held in the remote Northern Territory community of Barunga, on the lands of the Bagala clan of the Jawoyn people.

Barunga Festival holds a key place in Australian history as the home of the Barunga Statement, presented to then Prime Minister Bob Hawke at the festival in 1988.

Reconciliation Week – Bridging Now to Next

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), a time to reflect on our shared histories and cultures, and work towards a better future for all Australians.

The 2025 Reconciliation Week theme is Bridging Now to Next, which urges Australians to look to the future and continue the push towards a more united and respectful nation, guided by the lessons of the past.

This year’s Reconciliation Week also marks the 25th anniversary of the historic walk for reconciliation across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, involving more than 250,000 people.

Public Sector leading way on closing gender pay gap

Gender pay gaps of Commonwealth public sector employers have been published for the first time by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

The Commonwealth Public Sector Gender Equality Scorecard: Key Employer Results from 2023 shows that Commonwealth public sector employers have an average total remuneration gap of 6.4 per cent, compared to 21.1 per cent in the private sector (excluding CEOs and Heads of Business).

Dedication ceremony for Nyul Nyul Indigenous Protected Area in the Kimberley

The dedication of the Nyul Nyul Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) has today been celebrated with a ceremony – locking in traditional land management practices and delivering local jobs in the Kimberley.

The new IPA covers 144,493 hectares of land and sea Country over which Nyul Nyul people have sole native title rights, extending the Kimberley IPA network across the Dampier Peninsula.
