Outstanding Australian correctional service officers may now be awarded the Australian Corrections Medal, following Her Majesty The Queen’s approval of its place in the Australian honours system.

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Senator James McGrath announced the new medal for meritorious service, available to correctional officers within Australia.

“I strongly support recognition for members of the community who devote themselves to protect or assist others in the community. Like police, fire, ambulance and emergency services personnel, correctional officers carry out vital work in our communities and in doing so, can be exposed to dangerous situations. It is fitting that we may now honour those who go above and beyond the role in providing this important service,” Assistant Minister McGrath said.

The medal will sit alongside similar occupation-specific meritorious service awards and allow the recipient to use the post nominals ACM.

“The status of the award is reflected in its placement as part of the Australian honours and awards system alongside similar medals which recognise meritorious or distinguished service in particular occupations.”

The first awards of the new Australian Corrections Medal are expected to be announced as part of the 2018 Australia Day honours list.
