The Albanese Labor Government, in partnership with the Northern Territory Government, has delivered a $3.6 million upgrade of housing and infrastructure in Mungkarta, an Aboriginal homeland 80 kilometres south of Tennant Creek.
This investment is part of the Homelands Housing and Infrastructure Program (HHIP), a joint initiative to improve living conditions in remote homelands across the Northern Territory.
The final housing upgrades for Mungkarta were completed this month, ensuring residents have access to safe and appropriate housing.
The HHIP aims to improve the safety and health and wellbeing of residents by addressing the nine Healthy Living Practices including access to washing facilities, improving nutrition, temperature control, reducing dust exposure and the negative health impacts of overcrowding.
The community of Mungkarta holds deep cultural and historical significance, having been reclaimed by Traditional Owners through the Mungkarta Land Claim in 1988.
Since April 2023, the Albanese Labor Government has committed $220 million through the HHIP, while the Northern Territory Government contributes $40 million annually to support essential services in Aboriginal homelands - ensuring coordinated investment in housing, infrastructure and services.
