The Australian Government has released new and updated educational resources to strengthen student knowledge of Australia’s national symbols.

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, the Hon Patrick Gorman MP, said it is vital for Australian children to learn about their nation’s enduring symbols, which also celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“Our national symbols are a reflection of our diverse history and represent what is unique about our country, people and culture,” Assistant Minister Gorman said.

“All Australians, particularly our youth, should know about our anthem, flags, colours, flora and gemstone.

“We are proud to be sharing resources with Australian children to ensure the history, meaning and significance of our national symbols continue to be part of our cultural identity for generations to come.”

The new resources will include an interactive website, Unlocking Our Stories: Australia’s Symbols, containing student worksheets, interactive games, teacher lesson guides and at home guides.

The resources also include eight educational posters and updated Australian Flags and Australian Symbols booklets which are available on the PMC website.

“Young Australians will shape the future of our nation, and these resources are designed to enhance their understanding and appreciation of our unique identity,” Assistant Minister Gorman said.

“The interactive website is designed to engage children’s problem solving skills and to deepen their knowledge on the national symbols.”

The new resources have been developed for children in the school years group 3 to 8 to accompany the national curriculum.

Materials also reflect the recent change to the National Anthem, which was made to reflect a spirit of unity and Australia’s long Indigenous and multicultural history.
